Why must students demand transparency?

  1. Students and alumni deserve to know where BU money is invested.

  2. Students and alumni deserve to have a say in where BU money is invested.

  3. Climate change is a clear and present danger to humanity, ecosystem functions, and all living things. War is a clear and present danger to humanity and the largest polluter of all.

  4. Profiting off of such reckless destruction is an affront to victims of climate change, those experiencing gross human rights violations and the brunt of imperialism, and to the purported values of the university, including innovation, global mindedness.

  5. In order for the Binghamton community to develop alternative investment paths, current investments must be publicly disclosed in terms of exact monetary values.

  6. Divestment by an institution of higher education, and especially a SUNY university center, sends a powerful message of recognition for issues of environmental and social justice.

  7. A transition to renewable energy is inevitable; significant investment in cleaner energy sources and local environmental and social justice initiatives could serve as a long-term source of economic benefit for the university and the Broome County community.

  8. Universities across the country have bravely adapted to changing realities and divested. Ethical investment portfolios will become standard; ours will entice students to enroll at BU, reversing falling application numbers.

Why must Binghamton University divest?

  1. Climate change is a clear and present danger to humanity, ecosystem functions, and all living things. Profiting off of such reckless destruction is an affront to victims of climate change as well as to the purported values of the university.

  2. Divestment by an institution of higher education, and especially a SUNY university center, sends a powerful message of recognition for issues of environmental and social justice.

  3. Stanford University, Middlebury College, Johns Hopkins University, The New School, the entire University of Massachusetts system, and dozens of other esteemed schools have divested; to stand on the right side of history, Binghamton University must follow suit.
